A spring trip to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge inspired this stilt portrait. This long-legged and gawky bird looks awkward, almost silly, when moving around on his pink legs but seemed regal when he paused like this. Definitely one of my favorite shorebirds.

This piece won first place in the 2005 Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts’ Open Show.
