At the Hideout: fence lizard
At the Hideout—fence lizard
Colored Pencil on Fabriano
12" x 10"

This lovely fence lizard warily posed on a rock covered in lichens and moss before ducking down in his hiding place.

This is one lucky lizard: not only has he been the subject of artwork, but he also escaped an attack from a predator. Some species of lizards, including fence lizards, have tails that break off during attacks, allowing them to make an escape. The tail regrows over time, but there will always be a tell-tale bump at the breaking point. This lizard had been regrowing his tail for a while but it was still pretty stubby. For aesthetic reasons, I restored his tail to its former smooth, sweeping lines.
