Bittern in the Marsh Bittern in the Marsh
Colored Pencil on Fabriano
5" x 7"

Every springtime, we go to a nearby marsh to look and listen for the bitterns. Bitterns are not easy to spot because they blend so beautifully with the marsh grasses. To help their camouflage efforts, they freeze in position with their heads tipped up to pull their throat stripes up, making them look like still grasses. The best part about bitterns is their amazing call, a deep echoing "glug ga-glug." One of my more obscure talents is a great bittern imitation.
