|Light on Baskett Buttegreat horned owl|
Colored Pencil on Fabriano
17" x 10"
In the dappled conifer forest atop Baskett Butte, we spotted this great horned owl tucked away among the mossy limbs of a large douglas fir. Thanks to his wonderful mottled plumage, the owl blended beautifully with his surroundings. Most hikers walked on by, unaware that they were being observed. The great horned owl is also called the Tiger of the Forest, because he is such a ferocious hunter.

Baskett Butte is part of the Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge, down near Dallas, Oregon. Part of the refuge is lowland, flooded in winter for waterfowl. Another segment is the forested Baskett Butte and the nearby grassy hills. This is a popular weekend hiking spot. It’s a good place to see large groups of mule deer in the late afternoons. Rare prairie plants and insects occupy the grasslands.
